To make room for the latest arrival of Transformers and Princess gear, I'm cleaning out the baby toys from the game room. It's so sad to let all these cute baby blocks and shapes go. My babies aren't so baby-ish anymore. They are wanting to wear dresses and tiaras, and are making gunship noises while pretending to save the galaxy.
I think I've found a good home for the toys... they'll get to be loved all over again (and chewed on and banged on the floor).
Will did have a brief teary-eyed moment when he saw them all packed up, but he appears to be over that now.
They grow up fast. Snuggle with them every moment you can.
If life were a 2-lane highway, then it would be easy. Instead it’s an eight lane interstate with the unknown waiting for you on the other side of the next overpass. Balancing out the speed traps, 4 car pileups, and 90 mph Texas lane changes on the interstate of life is both exciting and challenging - I wouldn't change anything about it!

Lights in the Heights
I find myself compensating for forgoing our annual shindig this year by adding more and more lights to the front of the house. Must be withdrawal symptoms or avoided traumatic stress disorder (ATSD). I feel guilty that I'm not running around the house like a mad woman in my apron.
Okay - I'm over it now. Thanks for listening.
Have a happy merry time tonight wandering through the 'hood enjoying the entertainment and lights.

Ants in your pants
I'm sitting at gymnastics watching my "advanced" four year old tumble around. I'm minding my own business (shocked, I know), playing Sudoku on my iPhone.
Enter the soccer mom next to me. I classify her as that because she is dressed as so and for no other reason - workout leggings and polyester jacket with her New Balance shoes.
This grown woman cannot sit still. I mean, she is sitting in one place, but she keeps moving around like she's about to have a bladder problem really soon. It's starting to wear on me. Is it appropriate for me to ask her to stop fidgeting? Or if I can point her towards the ladies room? To top it off, she has a cold and her nose is running. What I mean to say is, she is sniffling like my children do when no one regularly asks them to blow their nose... every 4 seconds. Now THAT is really starting to wear on me. Blow your nose already!
I'm sure her child is also "advanced" but I'm not asking because I can't handle the sniffling, sneezing, can't sit still ants in my workout pants going on. I guess I'm not as social as I thought.

The high seas
I drive by this sketchy boat dealership in the heart of Montrose many times a week. On Sunday, this poor soul was parked along the street. I'm not certain who had naming rights, but regardless... someone was not feeling the love.

Giddy-up giddy-up, let's go!
The tree is trimmed. The stockings are hung. The Santa Claus' are put out. Elf on the Shelf is strategically placed. Mama is pooped and it ain't even December!!!
But, I got Annie's birthday invites ordered, Christmas cards ordered, and made a cute collage thank you card from pics Lisa Marie took at Will's party and got those ordered! This, on top of the pajama laden Internet shopping, and I spent too many hours in front of the computer this weekend. Now I need to get back to work so I can get paid to clickety-clack away on the keyboard!
Here's one pic from the photoshoot... and there's many more to come!

Boys will be boys
Will recently turned 3 years old and got a clean bill of health at his checkup. His favorite activities are puzzles, his Batman laptop, whacking his sister, Buzz Lightyear, running full speed into objects or people, and whacking his sister.
His vocabulary is growing more rapidly than Mike and I can keep up with, and he has this cute little lisp (that hopefully will fade over time). It's a game for Mike and I to decipher what it is he's saying sometimes.
The latest interpretation:
Will - "Daddy, I'm foosy. I'm FOOSY!"
[Mike and I look at each other puzzled]
Will - "Daddy... I'M FOOOOSY!!!"
[We still are clueless]
Will - "Daddy, I want leche!"
Ahhh... Spanish we can understand. He's THIRSTY.
Now I've of course decided that's the cutest thing ever... and possibly might start calling Mike 'foosy' as a term of endearment.

Making a list... Checking it twice
After a nice Thanksgiving at our house where I cooked my first turkey, I'm gearing up for Christmas big time.
I did some heavy Black Friday shopping from the comfort of my home via the Internet - pj's on and coffee in hand. I estimate that I'm about 80% done, but that's probably giving myself too much credit. We'll see as I get closer how well I did yesterday.
Today we had our family photos taken - thank you Lisa Marie!!! I'm nearly done with designing our Christmas card and should have those ordered tomorrow... Yippee!
Two nice young men came and hung our lights on the house and trees today - something I discourage Mike from doing because our roofline is so high... at least until I can take out more life insurance on him. I still need to hang the garland on the porch, and plan to do that tomorrow.
Mike and Will picked out a new (fake) tree for the house - NOT prelit. We have bad luck with prelit trees and opted to go with the old school method. I love real trees, but nearly put myself in the hospital last time I had one from allergy and asthma overload.
I'm loving this sweater weather and hope it lasts! I'll post pics soon of the family photoshoot.

"Can you hear me?"
"Is this thing on???"
If I can blog from my iPhone, what's the probability that I will do so more frequently than every three months? Better than zero, I hope!

Mainland - Day 2-4
As predicted, Wednesday was VERY interesting. At the crack of dawn (and that’s 5am in Shanghai), I was picked up by our driver and shuttled to the old Shanghai airport that does domestic flights, and boarded a plane for Xuzhou with my boss and another colleague. We sat for an hour and a half on the tarmac before taking off. I’m told this is normal.
We arrived in Xuzhou and met our driver on the other end who shuttled us to Zao Zhuang City, where our plant is located. It was over an hour drive, so we stopped in the city for lunch first. We had American Style lunch – which was a pepper steak, white rice, veggies, and a fried egg. It was actually pretty good, though I was sad that they did that for my benefit.
[Side note: if you ask me to pronounce any of these names, I will do my best, but will likely be screwing it up royally]
We arrived at the plant and got a very nice tour from one of the senior operators. The plant wasn’t running so we got to get up close and personal with it, climbing to the top of the structure for a full view of the surrounding countryside. This was “real China”. I have pics on my digital camera that I will post after I get home of the surroundings. Needless to say I felt like I had smoked a pack of cigarettes after we left, as the pollution from the neighboring coke over plant was really, really bad.
We were at the plant from just after lunch until 5pm… and eventually the urge came upon me. I had to use the facilities. I went into the ladies room, and this is what I found:
Yes, folks, after that, I had experienced all of the Chinese culture one could ever ask for. Use your imagination, and you’ll be pretty close to reality.
We headed back out to the airport at Xuzhou. On the way, there are multiple toll booths, as the Chinese government has recently built some very nice 4 lane highways, and like all good governments, they are asking the users of those highways (mostly BIG trucks) to pay for them.
Driving in China is an adventure, and while trying to squeeze our way into line at the toll booth, we had our first ‘encounter’. We exchanged paint with another car. Small amount of paint mind you, easily buffed out. However, our driver and the offended driver argued for a good 15 minutes over the “price” of this exchange. It’s my understanding that insurance isn’t the norm here as its very expensive, and so this is how negotiations are conducted… curb side. We gathered quite an audience, and even had the local security come to our aid…
Some unnamed dollar amount was exchanged, and we were on our way. My colleague politely informed me that this is “Chinese stuff” – in other words, the Chinese way of doing things. Also, it’s not polite to ask how much money was exchanged, so I don’t know. There was a lot of hand waving around the bumper… so hopefully it didn’t cost our driver too much.
We got to the airport an hour ahead of our scheduled departure and waited for our plane to arrive… 3 hours late. Again, I’m told this is normal.
Wednesday was a long day… crawled in bed at 1:30am.
Thursday was spent at the office. I was treated to a traditional dim sum lunch with three coworkers that was really delicious.
Friday I worked from the apartment and went to the big Gateway mall down the street in the late afternoon. The mall was about 6 floors of stores… incredible! I was too overwhelmed to buy anything. Yes, I know… close your mouth… it is possible.
Here are a couple more pics for your entertainment…
The view from the apartment – 27th floor
The mascot for the World Expo – his name is Hai Bao. I think he is a smurf derivative.
Tonight I’ll have dinner with some friends who are expats here. Hoping to see some more culture on the other side of the river.
Zaijian from Shanghai!

Mainland - Day 1
This is Carrie's sister, Sarah, here...reporting live from The Woodlands, Texas. So, I get an email from Carrie yesterday, who is in CHINA, and it's titled "...need your help". Really? Are you trying to give me a heart attack??? I thought at the very least, someone hacked into her account and was going to ask me to wire them money. Ha! Turns out, she was just having trouble blogging from over there and started rambling on about Communism or something.... :) So here I am to save the day! Carrie emailed me her pics and post and had me log in to her account and give ya'll the update. She even wrote "insert pic here" throughout the post. I guess she thinks I'm a little slow, huh? ;) I told her I would do it as long as she brought me back a purse or two. Sounds like a fair deal to me, right? Well, here it is! Enjoy...
After minimal sleep on Saturday night and gruelingly long flights (4 hrs + 12 hrs) and a 5 hour layover in San Francisco, I finally arrived in Shanghai! I passed through customs with ease, and was met by my company's driver just outside of customs - Jay. Jay held a sign that said "SES, Best Regards". SES is the name of my company, and I'm guessing that Best Regards was my name... as it's usually how I sign off on my business emails. Too funny. Jay doesn't speak English, but we managed to communicate just fine. He insisted on taking my bags, and then instructed me with his finger to wait at the curb while he pulled up the car.
We headed off into the city - about a 30 minute trip from the airport to the corporate apartment which will be my home until next Wednesday. On the way out of the airport, I got my first glimpse of the polite Chinese translation of an English saying "Beautiful and pitiful is the grass under your foot." That had me smiling for a good 10 minutes.
The World Expo is ongoing in Shanghai, and as we crossed the Lupu Bridge from the Pudong side (east) to the Luwan side (west), Jay spoke his only word to me - "Expo"- and pointed to a massive complex to my right. I saw several 10's of thousands of people milling about and huge exhibition halls for different countries. If I get adventurous this weekend, I may head over there to see what I can see!
"Lupu Bridge is the second longest arch bridge and steel bridge in the world"
We arrived at the corporate apartment in no time... it's a very nice 2 bedroom apartment with a tiny bathroom and tiny kitchen. Here's a pic from the website for the complex - and my place looks just like this!
It's very comfortable and has an ayi (housekeeper) who comes daily during the week.
I went to sleep pretty early Monday night - 9pm - which was as long as I could hold my eyelids open. I woke up at 3:30am on Tuesday morning, and just got out of bed and started wandering around the apartment. Then, the sun came up - at 5am! I was desparate for breakfast and a coffee so I ventured out around 7am to track down the Starbucks, and found it and the grocery story City Shop - which has mostly western items - and a french bakery and restaurant my boss has told me about. Every business was closed, and I was beginning to fret when alas I found the Starbucks was dutifully open! A grande mocha and blueberry muffin later and I was a VERY happy camper :).
The office doesn't get moving until 9am I was told, so I went back to the apartment and scurried around until 8:45 when I made my trek to the Pine City Hotel, where our office is located.
Meeting everyone was great - they are all very friendly and work very hard to speak English to me. I reminded them that they all know much more English than I do Chinese! Here's the marquee for my new employer in our Shanghai office.
After work I went to the City Shop and bought about 550 RMB worth of food - just under $100 US - for the apartment. Cheese was the most expensive item, but alas, I love cheese.
Interesting facts I've discovered so far:
1. Chinese people like Buicks. There are hundreds of them on the roads. Apparently the Chinese affinity for Buick saved the label from being decimated by GM.
2. There are no real rules of the road except keep moving forward. This goes for cars, scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians. If you hesitate, you confuse everyone. So keep moving.
This morning I fly inland to our plant. Something tells me this could be a VERY interesting trip.

The Switcheroo
After years of having all of our family photos stored conveniently on Kodak Gallery's Premier site as our own website, they are discontinuing this service at the end of this year. BOOOO.... HISSSS!!!! I have a gazillion pics on there, and hence I start the challenge of relocating them.
The old site, www.kodakgallery.com/mfthompson, which has house all of our family events since Mike and I got married, will be defunct, and replaced with our new (and improved) site on SmugMug. To see the most recent of pictures of the Thompson family, visit thompsonfamily.smugmug.com, and you will get the latest and greatest.
I leave for China in the morning (before the crack of dawn), and am taking Mike's little digital camera with me, so I hope to have some good shots to share when I return in 10 days.
Check out the new site and let me know what you think. It's very different from KodakGallery, but geared more for photographers, so I'm hoping its longevity will be greater than the last option.
Here's a couple of semi-recent pics of the kids from the spring in the bluebonnets...they were slightly tired of the sun in their faces and driving, so it was difficult getting my models to cooperate for a combo pic.
See you all soon!

I am going to China on Sunday. Needless to say, neither of us will be the same after my visit. I fly into Shanghai, and then it's off to "real China", as my boss puts it.
I promise to blog from there if the communist firewall doesn't prevent me. Also, I'm breaking my promise about blogging about my duck boat tour in Boston, seeing as how they have become noted as unsafe in Philidelphia (or was it Pittsburg?).
Until next time, stay classy Houston.

Just a few pics from the Fourth
The kiddos on our front porch enjoying dessert... brownies!
Andrea kissing on her precious baby girl Amelia Jane
The bikes decorated for the bike parade!
Annie all ready to ride her bike
around the esplanade for the first time
Will's feet couldn't quite reach the pedals,
so he had some help from Dad
Mrs. Farmer with her ribbon for her prize winning blueberry pie.
We couldn't even afford to buy it back in the auction to eat it!
Amelia - the happiest baby on the block!

Independence Day
Man, I hope I spelled that right. That's one of those words that just has too many e's in it to be right. Oh well... Forgive the imperfections please.
Good day today. Church was filled with the choir and congregation singing all of my favs - the National Anthem, America the Beautiful, My Country Tis of Thee... Now if only we could have busted out in Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA, it would have been sweet perfection. I'm a softy patriot and I usually tear up during any of those individually, so collectively they are a danger to my eyeliner, but I managed to keep it together throughout the whole service.
We followed church with Chuy's, where I made the mistake of having a margarita. With this heat and two shrimp tacos, I was immediately sent into a food coma. At home, I got both kids down for a nap asap and then crashed for about an hour until Annie told me it was time to get up. I could have probably slept till 5pm. But alas, we had guests coming!
The Guyre's, Hayden's, and Farmer's came bearing various accutriments including but not limited to beer, fruit, sliders, brownies, blackberry cobbler, rice krispie treats in star shapes and red, white, and blue, and oh yea... Beer. The Thompson's provided the hot dogs, chips, homemade guacamole, cream cheese dip, and some creamy jalapeño from Chuy's. Let's just say that no one... Not even Jason Guyre...went hungry.
The esplanade was filled with kids and parents running around. There was a pie baking contest - congrats Carrie Farmer for her #2 prize winning blueberry pie - a bike parade for the kiddos with decorations, and several bouncing deals to torture your small children. At least they had them segregated by age, though maybe weight is a better way to divvy up the kids in those things. I know some hefty 5 year olds that can take my 25%er down for the count.
Then we all trekked down to Stude park where the kids and dads enjoyed the city's fireworks display and the moms worried that we would be short a kid when it was time to go. Post trek bak home, each kid proceeded to eat MORE... I'm certain at least one will be puking before the night is over. Ours are down for the count...Annie was asleep before her head hit the pillow, but I'm sure Will will make his nightly appearance around 2am into our bed.
Happy Independence Day folks! God bless the USA!

Ours are down for the count...Annie was asleep before her head hit the pillow, but I'm sure Will will make his nightly appearance around 2am into our bed.
Happy Independence Day folks! God bless the USA!

Incognito
Today, I was approached by a Mormon. Not just any Mormon, mind you, but one cleverly disguised as a Kroger employee. I was so convinced that he was an employee, that when he offered to "help me", I told him he could have the cart back (I was loading groceries into my car in the Kroger parking lot).
To my credit, he was wearing what appeared to be a Kroger employee outfit - white button down shirt, black tie, black pants, and had a name tag on. Of course, after he started to get really friendly, I did a closer inspection of the nametag and realized that yes, it did have the LDS logo on it. Aha... friendly neighborhood Kroger employee he was not... mystery solved.
As an aside, I will not comment on my personal beliefs about the LDS religious sect, but instead will espouse how much I love the newly renovated Kroger at 11th and Shepard - reported by CultureMap as the largest Kroger in the city of Houston. I am still getting confused by the aisles, but they have put up a nice new placard that has a full menu of items, and where they are to be located. Even my husband (who, when he can't find an item on the list, claims that the grocery store was completely out of said item) would be able to successfully complete a grocery shopping trip. And the employees there, either imported from other Signature Kroger stores, or just turned over a new leaf due to their fab new store, ARE very friendly and helpful... so you can see how the confusion could occur.
Have a safe and fun Independance Day!

A long time a'comin'
I have been a busy busy busy bee of late. So I have been absent from my blog - for that, I'm sorry. I even was scolded this week by a follower!
What have I been up to, you ask? Well, let's recap:
1. We finally, after two years, sold our latest (read final) real estate venture. Let's just sum that up with the fact that I could not sing the Halleluiah Chorus loud enough to celebrate.
2. We finally, after two years, are enclosing the upstairs porch off of the master bedroom to be functional space - a sitting room in the master, a storage closet, and a second master closet. Can I get an Amen? That project is in the final stages (just painting left), and I am a happy happy woman. Not to be ignored is the fact that I will have more room in my closet for shoes :).
3. I got myself a new ride. Yes, the 7 year old Benz has gone on to a new and happy owner, and I am the proud driver of a 2010 Barrents Blue Volvo XC60 with integrated booster seats. Amazing Grace! Now people over 6' tall can ride comfortably with leg room to spare.
4. Last, but certainly not least, just last week I turned in my notice of resignation of my job. Details on future ventures to come soon. My last day is next Friday, and for now it couldn't come soon enough! I will be doing a serious praise dance that day.
So, what fun has happened recently, you ask? Well, we kept our record in tact with Will getting sick the night before I left on my latest business trip (I'm blogging from the beautiful city of Boston). He seems to be on the mend, but he sounded like his own white noise machine for a day or so there. Poor kiddo!
Annie spent a week at a workshop at the Houston Ballet Academy. This was followed by two tickets to a performance of La Fille Mal Gardee', which she loved and clapped at all the right times. She'll do a two week theater camp for preschoolers at the end of the month that should be HIGHLY entertaining, as they will create their own production, costumes and all. I'll keep you posted.
I am headed to dinner and will promise to update even more later with my ventures in walking around Boston, including a Duck Boat tour of the city, pictures and all!
Peace out

Viva Las Vegas
Aaahhhhhhh....
I just returned from 3 nights at the wonderful Monte Carlo on the lively Las Vegas strip. Did I win, you ask? Well, if you're talking about cash, then no. But if you're referring to blissful child-free moments with adult conversations, quiet naps by the pool, entertainment not suitable for people under the age of 18, then yes... I hit the jackpot! After a recent diagnosis by my internist of stress-induced hypertension, this was WAY overdue.
Mike and I went with good friends Vanessa and Nitin, and two other couples that are friends of theirs. Fun was had by all! We actually saw two shows (yes they were able to pull me away from the blackjack tables, David) - cirque de soliel's Zumanity - definitely not for the faint of heart or prude - and Frank Caliendo, an impressionist who was pretty good as well.
I did a little shopping but left most of my donation at the bj tables to a burly woman named Tatiana who could show a 6 and draw a 21 consistently like you've never seen before. But I had a great time never-the-less.
And the best part? A three day weekend to top it off! There were some cute pics taken that I'll post when I get copies, and some you'll have to find after I'm long dead and gone that Mike took of me and some guy named Steve.
Have a great Memorial weekend and say prayers for those who can't spend it with their families because they are defending our liberties.

Back in the saddle
It's been a while, my friend. Busy days for me lately. Leaving on a jet plane again tomorrow -a two night jaunt to Kansas City. Should be a good break from the heat, and equally important a small reduction in stress level. Somehow the combination of zits and high blood pressure at 35 just doesn't seem fair. Not to fear, Wonder Woman here has a physical lined up for Friday to get herself checked out.
I hope the house holds up...and both children and husband are in tact upon my return. We have a good weekend ahead with a shindig to attend, and a trip to Vegas to prepare for. Yes, folks, you read that right. After ten years of LV abstinence, I will be returning at the end of this month. Let's hope my husband doesn't wonder what creature he has married after he finds me glued to a blackjack table for 12 hours straight, with a pack of cigarettes and who knows how many martinis put away.
Say some prayers...I'll need 'em!

Ree-diculous
I am 35 years old. THIRTY-FIVE! What is the deal with this HUGE GINORMOUS zit on my chin???? I mean, seriously people, I am WAY too old for this. This is ree-diculous. Isn't there some cutoff birthday when you no longer get these mountainous miscolored blemishes on your face? If I was pregnant, I would be in a high-risk category for my age. I think that awards me something with regards to acne, right?!? I'm on the downhill slide to 40. I'm in "middle age". I've borne two beautiful (and pesky) children. I have worked hard for my whole career. Can't I just get a break on the breakouts???
Ree-diculous.

Ritas
I was lucky enough to have dinner and margaritas (I prefer mine frozen with salt) with two girlfriends/former coworkers last night who I hadn't seen in almost a year. We visited my favorite mexican food joint - Chuy's - and had a great time laughing about work and telling crazy, funny stories. I miss working with them - wonderful, brilliant women who work their tails off and don't get half the recognition they've earned. Ahh, but alas, a new role in a new company brings new challenges - and I'm knee deep in them. Good news is nothing has changed at the old job - the stories are still the same, still just as funny, and still just as unbelievable.
Thanks for the good laughs, ladies!

Back in the saddle
So I'm sorry to say that I played hookie from the gym the last three weeks. I have no excuse except for social life (rodeo) and work (travel), but as I've been informed, that is no excuse. I didn't realize it had been quite that long, but was reminded this morning (with a smile on his face) by Andrew - my personal kettle bell torture expert - that it HAD been that long. But I was just as happy to see him as he was to see me... as by some miracle I hadn't lost any weight over the past few weeks (you mean it just doesn't continue to fall off your body while your eating some weird XYZ Airline Chicken Wrap that was nuked under pressure at 30,000 ft?).
I did drag myself there at 6:00am this morning with Emily, and we survived about 45 min of grueling Russian-esque torture. I am feeling okay today, but know that the worst is yet to come.
Thank you Andrew!

Amen
Today, we had our son Will baptized. Mind you, it has taken me 2+ years to pull this off. I have been mentally planning to have him baptized at the "next convenient time", but that didn't happen quite as quickly as one would hope. So, at 2 1/2 years old, Will was finally baptized. My oldest (and one of my dearest) friend came in from Dallas with her husband, and they were anoited his Godparents. Let me clarify: I don't mean she is my eldest friend; I have just known her longer than I have known any of my other friends, which today that is 35 years and 154 days.
Everyone gathered at our church (Annie calls it the "castle") and the service went off without a hitch. Even the priest who scooped up Will off the floor to douse him a bit was an unbelievable pro. You would have thought aliens had bodysnatched my son and replaced him with a creature from far outer space who was studying our species and was quite content to have water poured on his head just to see what would happen next.
The rest of the kids gathered 'round the baptismal font to watch the spectacle. Annie offered that she would like to go too. I told her she was baptized as a baby, and she declared that she wanted to do it again. Luckily I was able to distract her, but on second thought, I wonder if two baptisms does you any good on those really bad days? hmmm... something to think about.
With the service over, everybody came to the house for dinner. 18 adults. 13 kids. Kids were victorious.
But the food came out hot that was supposed to, and cold that was supposed to. Enough food to go around, but not too much left over. Plenty of wine, and the boys made an extra beer run to help get them through the Final Four games on TV upstairs.
I am again reminded how I am very blessed to have such wonderful friends and family that help in the kitchen, clean up in the gameroom, discipline kids (no matter whose they are), refill my wine glass, tell funny stories, kiss me hello and goodbye, and tell me they love me often.
What else can a girl ask for?

Easter Bunny Fairy
Dear Mr. Easter Bunny Fairy,
I'm writing you to inquire as to your availability to fill up Easter baskets for my children this weekend. Should I put an egg under my pillow? Do I need to put milk and cookies out on the table by the fireplace? What kind of "payment" will get this activity done for me? If I promise not to eat any chocolate eggs or marshmallow Peeps, will you please come to my house and put together beautiful baskets for my children, dye eggs for them to search for, and take pictures of them for the grandparents?
Thanks in advance.

I'm a Big Girl now
After 35 years of refusing to pay more than $40 for a purse and making that last for a good year, I have finally done it. I bought a big girl purse. What I mean to say is... I bought a designer handbag. My bro-in-law and niece took the kids to the zoo this morning, which left me with some mommy shopping time. And boy, did I spend it well!
Enter the Elaine Turner store in Rice Village. Recently I met two fantastic ladies - one a former designer and the other a current company officer for Elaine Turner - and so I just had to check it out. I have never been one for designer purses because I feel like most of them spend too much energy on printing the label all over the bag. But no ma'am, Miss Turner hasn't fallen for that trick. Check out my new baby!

Yes, it is SOOOO me. Yes, I spent WAY more than my typical purse budget on it, but I plan to make it last. The saleswoman kindly reminded me that it was washable with soap & water, for any kid-type accidents. Yippee!
I also got the keyfob to go with it...
Luckily, I managed to avoid the shoes... phew, close call!

the worst is over?
croup
pronunciation: /ˈkr{uuml}p/
function: n
: inflammation, edema, and subsequent obstruction of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi especially of infants and young children that is typically caused by a virus and is marked by episodes of difficult breathing and hoarse metallic cough
According to her pediatrician, it lasts 4-7 days. We're on Day 5 of the bad days so that should mean we're nearing the end. So far today, minimal coughing... mostly when in the prone position. But Annie is in the best spirits you can imagine, so apparently it isn't affecting her attitude. And she is super excited to spend time with Mommy today - yea for me!
Also as important, no sign of bugs today. No eggs either. All I can say to that whole deal is GROSS.
Maybe we'll be in shape to go back to school by next week. Hope so... the kids' Easter party is next Wednesday and there's nothing like a good egg hunt with 2 and 4 year olds for a good giggle and fun picture taking opportunity.
Can't wait to see what disasters come up next week while I'm gone!

Murphey's Law
It is inevitable. If I leave town, disaster will happen. Not just little disaster, but unnecessarily BIG disaster. Disaster like croup. Lice. Vomiting. Refusal to sleep.
Isn't it enough that I have the underlying guilt associated with being a working mom? Isn't it enough that I don't sleep well when I travel and get tired of sitting in airports? No. God has other things in mind. Apparently I DID do something in my past that I must suffer for continually.
Now, with that all said, no one is suffering more than my loving husband Mike, who is home actually dealing with all of these unnatural disasters. He gets all of the glory of the doctor's visits, being the target of such vomit, and having the psychosomatic itchiness associated from our 4 yr old getting lice. He also gets credit for handling all of these things with minimal complaint.
But not I. Instead, I get the full-blown doubly compacted guilt associated with not being there to do my matronly duty of caring for my sick babies. Wonder what disasters will rear their ugly head on my next business trip next week?
Ciao

Oh what a night...
It's been a while since I felt like I was in my groove, in my element, with it. But last night at the HLSR performance by the Black Eyed Peas - baby, I was home! What an awesome show! I danced in my seat (out of courtesy for those behind me) until the last song when it didn't matter anymore. The entire Reliant Stadium was on its feet - which is not an easy task for an entertainer to do in that venue.
Two words - Fergie rocks. Yes, I admittedly have a girl-crush on her.

She had one wardrobe change, but basically wore a unitard with this plexiglass shield bodice over it for the first half - very futuristic - and a hot little black number with fish nets and over-the-knee silver metallic boots for the second half.
She looked gorgeous and sounded phenomenal. I couldn't stop moving! What a great time with Jen & David - even in our nose-bleed seats we have so much fun. I'd like some more. Please pass the Peas!

Pause
Someone asked me today "why in the world are you doing this?" and I thought I should address this question and the like.
1. I have a lot to say, and not enough time in the day to say it.
2. Even when I do have enough time to say it, I often don't have an appropriate audience. My preschoolers really don't want to hear most of what I have to say that isn't related to Mickey Mouse or Buzz Lightyear.
3. I've been told on many occasions that I'm funny. Now, funny is a relative term, and I'm certainly no comedianne. Also, I'm hoping as I reflect on those comments that they didn't mean funny lookin'.
4. I need a brain drain. With all of thecrap stuff I have going on, I need a source for downloading some thoughts. As I previously promised, I will attempt to keep this complaint free and also inappropriate four-letter word free, the latter being a stretch goal.
I also was recently asked "how in the world do you have time to do this?" Simple. I don't spend a lot of time on it. My brain works overdrive on stuff like this, and I am a really fast typist.
Goon night Houston.

Come Monday
It's that day again... Monday. Moon-day. Wishing I was still in bed asleep day. The springing forward we did this weekend wasn't able to offset my cumulative lack of sleep, so I found myself in bed at 8:30pm last night (really 7:30pm on my body-clock) and didn't make a peep until 6:45am. Whoa! That felt good. Bad news was I didn't make it to the gym. Good news is I am no longer sore from the kettle-bell workout I did on Friday.
So, along those notes, I have taken on a new lease on life and am trying to get myself back into fighting shape. Mike and I got a family membership to the local YMCA late last year following it's complete renovation. It's really nice and clean and very close to the house, so it's a good motivation factor. Plus, the folks there are not trying to be eye-candy, which makes it all the more pleasant.
I started a "weight-training" class at the end of January, which pairs you with a few other folks and a personal trainer. We learned how to use the machines and make "monster sets" of exercises. The class was 6 weeks, and I feel like I got some good workout habits out of it - no more excuses of not knowing what to do once I get to the gym.

Last week my friend and workout buddy Emily left me a haunting message - she had signed us both up for a personal kettle-bell lesson from one of the trainers at the Y. OMG. That's all I have to say about that. We met him on Friday morning, and for 30 minutes worked out with a 10 lb kettle-bell. For those of you who don't know what that is, here's a pic.
It looks pretty sissy for a piece of workout equipment, but let me assure you folks, that this is a form of torture. According to the WWW, they were used starting in the 1700's by the Russians by strongmen and the Soviet Special Forces. So you can see how the "torture" aspect is not a hard stretch.
Needless to say, I am going to give this a shot for a while if my body can handle it. I'm motivated to remove the last remnants of "baby" from my body.
Enjoy the extra hour of daylight you just got... you earned it.
Peace out.

The Weekender
I promised myself that I would try not to whine about stuff in this forum (I'll save that for when I see you in person). So instead, I'm going to tell you that my week was more difficult than usual, but there were some awesome happenings that more than made up for the negatives.
1) You just can't beat the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (http://www.hlsr.com/). Mike and I went to see Rascall Flatts with good friends Emily & Jason on Wednesday evening. We enjoyed awesome first level seats for free (thanks Greg!), cold beer, giant bbq baked potatoes, easy parking, and great music - never mind the super entertaining rodeo events and moving patriotic tributes for Military Appreciation Night. Don't forget the most popular Mutton Bustin' - what a hoot! What a great evening with my hubby and friends.
2) Thursday night Mike's mom graciously watched the kids while we went to dinner at The Glass Wall - our favorite eating establishment that also happens to be just around the corner from our house (http://www.glasswalltherestaurant.com/). Rock on with the short rib tacos, sweet potatoes that make your mouth water, and grilled onion with blue cheese topping! Making me hungry just thinking about it!
3) This BEAUTIFUL weather today in Houston - couldn't have asked for a more gorgeous sunny mild temp day to be had - not a cloud in the sky! Made me wanna lay down in green pastures and take a nap.
4) Discovered a new awesome spot for dining - The Big Mamou on Studewood (http://www.thebigmamou.com/). On their perfectly placed back patio (out of direct sun) I devoured a full pound of crawfish, corn and new potatoes with my cold Corona and lime. And not to stop there, I swiftly ate not one, but TWO handmade beignets with a cup of hot chickory coffee. It's my understanding that the proprietors are NOLA transplants... so that should tell you something about the awesomeness of this meal.
Now, in case you don't know me that well, you might not have picked up on the trend in my "great" moments for the week. It is an undeniable fact that I LOVE food. I mean LOVE IT. Good food - not poorly thought out stuff that you slop on the plate - but food that someone prepared with meaning and purpose and love. This is of course contrary to my plan to lose the last of my baby weight, which I am diligently working on via exercise and counting calories (more on that later).
Overall, the week has ended on a high. Next week is potentially starting off with a bang, but I'll know more on that tomorrow.
Cheers!
Getting on the onramp...
Well, I have been following a few blogs of friends and family for a while now, and decided it was time to get off my rear and blog. Lord knows I have never had a shortage of things to say! Please forgive any rookie blogging errors, as I have never used this thing before. Here we go!
